May Day Bike Awards

 

Bicycles, top awards at the annual May Day program for Fulton area youths sponsored by the Fulton Lodge of Elks. Bike awards went to Laura Grosvent of 333 Pathfinder Courts. John Ware. Fulton RD 2. and James Zahakos of 217 Cayuga St., Saturday afternoon. Other awards presented at the afternoon program at Recreation Park went to Betsy Paiko, Sharon Munger. Jerry

Fox. Larry Dishaw. Patricia Taylor. Veronica Patane, C Dill, Dominic Gifford and Mary Fineron. More than 3,000 youths participated in the program which opened with a morning parade.

Get Up Early, Kids!

Youth Day Starts Saturday A.M.

A full day of events are in store far the youngsters of Fulton and Hannibal as the Fulton Elks Ninth Annual Youth Day gets underway this Saturday. The program will open with a parade starting at 10 a.m. at

S. 4th and Oneida Sts. Taking part in this year's parade will be school bands from Fulton Jr. and Sr. Bauds from Hannibal Central School, Waterloo High School and the Oswego Fife and Drum Corps and also Romulus Central School.

Those in the line of march will be the Elks Officers. V.F.W. of the County and auxiliaries. County fire departments, boys scouts, girls scouts and the C.Y.O. of Fulton. Several batons twirling groups will also take part as well as floats and fire equipment.

Following the parade the Elks Youth Leadership contest winners will be  presented their Savings Bonds and certificates at Recreation Park by State Youth Chairman James B. Hanlon.

Immediately after the presentation three baton twirling teams will give an exhibition. Nan's Rockettes, sponsored by

the Fulton Lodge of Elks, and second place winners in last summer's national contest, will be one of the participating groups.

Field events will be next on the agenda with local youths competing for trophies and medals. Four bicycles will be given, away following the athletic field events. Fulton and Hannibal Grammar School

students have been registering at their schools this week for the drawing. The winners have to be present at the park to

claim. their award.

Also on Saturday afternoon the Elks Jr. Rifle Club will hold a shoot competing for trophies and medals.

 

(1976) Fulton Elks Hold 25th Annual May Day Week

Fulton Elks May Day events were attended by over 5,000 young boys and girls. Also attending were parents of many of the children as well as City and State officials. This twenty-fifth annual event sponsored by the Elks of Fulton Lodge No. 830 was held at the War Memorial Recreation Center.

The program at 9:30 a.m. was opened by raising of the flag by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, followed by opening remarks of welcome by Exalted Ruler George LaBeef, and introduction of City and County officials. Mayor Percy Patrick addressed the crowd and urged the youth of today to protect and defend our flag and all the virtues our flag stands for. The Ladies Auxiliary was on hand to serve the hungry crowd with food and soft drinks during the entire field events. Out of town carnival furnished rides and various forms of entertainment for the youngsters as well as adults. Drawing of bicycles by lucky winners started at 2 p.m. for children from 4th through 8th grade.

There were five May Day, queens representing different age groups of daughters of the Elks.

Also many field events were held during the day.

May 4, city officials, Elks youth officials, and the winning junior hockey team sponsored by the

Elks enjoyed a dinner at the Elks Lodge prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary. Following dinner, the students took over the City Hall and its official business, acting in the following capacities: Bill

Morrell as Mayor, Karen Kemmis as First Ward Alderwoman, Mary Beth Goss, Second Ward; Sara

Knight, Third; Mary Flick, Fourth; James McNamara, Fifth; Wells Christie, Sixth; Billie

Natoli, City Attorney; Sue Mirabito, City Judge; Deb Hamer, City Clerk; Cara Valette, City Chamberlain; Pete Christie, City Engineer; Gretchen Flick, Supt. Recreation; Kim Siebers,

Housing Inspector, and Sue Falanga, Fire Chief. This young official family conducted and concluded the semi-monthly agenda in a business-like manner. On May 6 and 8, the Elks furnished

refreshments for the handicapped children at BOCES School at Mexico and the Fulton's Association of Retarded Children. This concluded the May Youth Week by the Fulton B.P.O.E. No. 830 which obtained community praise and kind words of appreciation from the Mayor and his

official family.
